Over the next week students of Walnut Elementary School will be doing a lot of reading.
The 2023 Patriot Read-A-Thon kicked off Monday afternoon for Walnut students. The special fundraiser will see students cracking open books for reading hours and pledges from local residents.
Walnut kindergarten teacher Tammy Ehr says the students and staff are excited about the fundraiser that will support future field trips and the purchase of school supplies. She tells KVOE, in addition to the money raised, the main purpose of the event is to increase literacy both in and outside of the classroom.
Students also have several incentives to help them reach specific reading minutes and monetary donation goals. Those incentives include Principal Jami Dakin kissing a pig, a doughnut party, VR goggles, sliming Principal Dakin and a VIP tour of Arrowhead stadium just to name a few.
In an effort to help students reach these goals, Walnut will be holding a special family literacy night Tuesday as part of Read Across America Week. The event will begin at 6 pm at Walnut.
If you are interested in donating to the fundraiser you can contact a Walnut student or family directly or contact the school by calling 620-341-2288.
The Read-A-Thon will continue through Mar. 9. For more information call the school or find Walnut Elementary on Facebook.
