Drivers wanting to use Kansas Highway 177 north of Council Grove, especially those traveling to Junction City or Manhattan, still have a lengthy detour to navigate as a reconstruction process continues for the highway.
Phase 2 of highway reconstruction efforts begins March 28, meaning K-177 will close from halfway between the K-4 junctions outside Alta Vista all the way north to Interstate 70. Thru traffic will still be detoured from Council Grove west on US Hughway 56 to Herington, north on US 77 to Junction City and east on Interstate 70 to the K-177 junction.
K-177 should officially reopen in October.
This comes a year after Phase 1 began from the Council Grove reservoir to the K-4 junctions. Phase 2 will complete the project.
Wildcat Construction of Wichita is the primary contractor. The project cost is estimated at over $52 million.
