Part of a Lyon County road just west of Emporia will be closed down for the foreseeable future.
The reason is bridge work needed on Road 170, or Old Highway 50, between Roads E-5 and F. County Engineer Chip Woods says the bridge deck has a hole and corrosion where the galvanized bridge plank sits over the main beams, and the bridge also needs to be checked to see if the beams themselves need to be replaced.
Woods says he has asked the county’s bridge inspection consultant to prioritize the Road 170 bridge so the county can take needed steps at that location.
The Lyon County Highway Department is reminding drivers not to go around barricades, either with this situation or at any time when roads are officially blocked.
