8:30 pm Thursday: Drivers cautioned as recent snowfall leads to seasonal driving conditions on area roads and highways
Weather conditions transitioned quickly from springlike to wintry Thursday.
Temperatures shifted significantly from the low 60s to upper 30s shortly after noon. Following brief light rainfall, wintry precipitation began shortly before 6 pm and became heavy snowfall just before 7 pm.
Some area roads and highways are beginning to experience seasonal driving conditions including US Highway 50 between the Lyon and Chase County lines, US Highway 56 between the Lyon and Greenwood County lines and also between the Lyon and Osage County lines. Kansas Highway 99 and US 56 four miles east of Allen are partially snow-covered.
Forecasts are calling for less than half an inch of accumulation and widespread travel issues are not expected long-term due to warm ground conditions. That being said, drivers need to be cautious due to the heavy snow and steady wind gusts around 40 mph that have been commonplace since Wednesday afternoon.
Wind advisories continue for all area counties until 1 am Friday. For the latest travel conditions be sure to visit Kandrive.org.
