The Emporia High baseball team was swept in its season opening doubleheader at Soden’s Grove Thursday against Ottawa.
Ottawa won the first game 14-3 in five innings before completing the sweep with a 3-2 victory over the Spartans in the finale.
Emporia High coach Anthony Markowitz says the Spartans had their chances to salvage a split against the Cyclones.
Game one was tied at two after one inning of play before the Cyclones put up two in the third, eight in the fourth and two in the fifth. Emporia High added its final run in the fourth inning.
Owen Ruge was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double.
In the second game, Ruge went the distance on the mound, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out six.
Emporia High took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Jaxon Dial in the second. Ottawa responded with three in the third. Emporia High cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Chase Harrington.
Max Rusco went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Up next for the Spartans is their Centennial League opener against Hayden at home next Friday.
