Noon Sunday: Critical fire danger setting up for Tuesday; fire weather watches announced for Chase, Greenwood counties
After rugged fire conditions Friday, a repeat event may well be setting up for Tuesday.
Chase and Greenwood counties are in a fire weather watch from 10 am Tuesday to 2 am Wednesday. The National Weather Service Wichita office says wind gusts steadily at 25-35 mph — possibly gusting as high as 65 mph — will combine with relative humidity levels at 10-15 percent to cause extreme fire conditions.
Fire weather watches often serve as precursors to red flag warnings, both signaling critical fire danger and triggering automatic burn bans while they are in effect.
Friday had numerous grass fires develop areawide with straight-line gusts between 60-70 mph. Thankfully, no injuries were reported and no structures were damaged.
