The Lee Beran Recreation Center will be open at normal hours Monday after a reported gas leak, which turned out to be unrelated to natural gas.
The incident at 313 West Fourth was reported shortly before noon after reports of a gas smell in the natatorium. Less than 30 minutes later, Empora Fire made the decision to evacuate the entire building as a precaution. Emporia Recreation Commission management then decided to close the building for the rest of the day.
After a walkthrough and investigation by Kansas Gas, Rec Commission Director Tom McEvoy says the issues were actually rooted in an air handling unit ventilation system in the natatorium. The Rec Commission has made arrangements to have the unit fixed no later than Tuesday.
