Former US president Donald Trump is set to be arraigned in federal court in New York on Tuesday.
Besides the political ramifications for the overall 2024 presidential election — with Trump a leading candidate — and concerns about protests, Emporia State University Political Science Professor Michael Smith says there could well be complications for Trump’s campaign effort.
Given those complications, Trump still has a lot of support in the Republican party. However, it remains to be seen whether that support will continue as the election and court processes continue.
There are also concerns about whether protests will be peaceful following the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Trump is expected in federal court on business fraud charges, although the indictment is sealed until Trump’s expected appearance. Trump’s attorney says the charges are connected to Trump paying adult film actress Stormy Daniels, allegedly to keep her from going public about an affair that Trump has denied.
ABC News will have ongoing updates on the Trump indictment and related court proceedings.
