Take Back the Night, the annual event organized by SOS and Emporia State University to bring attention to the impacts of sexual assault, returns to the community calendar Thursday night.
Activities start at 6 pm at Emporia State’s Albert Taylor Hall, with a candlelight vigil and speak-out — where people can share their experiences if they choose — as part of the event.
On KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Wednesday, SOS advocate Rachell gave a simple reason why people should attend.
Part of the event includes a talk from Curt and Christy Brungardt, the founders of Jana’s Campaign — developed after the Brungardt’s daughter, was killed in a domestic violence incident 15 years ago. Also speaking will be Emily Steimel-Handy, an Emporia State student who will talk about her advocacy and her experiences.
SOS Program Coordinator Kathryn Wilkerson says Take Back the Night is a way to both discuss the impact of sexual violence and to raise awareness of SOS services for victims.
