Sunday while watching Meet the Press I had another epiphany.
This time it was political in nature about who I might support for President of the United States in 2024.
The current wisdom is that we will see a re-match between incumbent Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump. My feeling is such a choice would not be in the best interest of our country which is hopelessly stuck in political gridlock.
Even as a registered Republican I voted for Joe Biden in 2020 because President Trump carried too much baggage and was too erratic. Neither condition has improved for Mr. Trump.
President Biden has done an okay job but is too partisan at a a time when we need action on many issues meaning compromise will be necessary.
My epiphany came after listening Sunday to an interview with West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin. He’s listed as a moderate Democrat which means he avoids extreme views and occupies a centre position on the left, right political spectrum.
Manchin previously served as Secretary of State and Governor of West Virginia before replacing Senator Robert Byrd after he died in 2010.
Manchin declined to confirm he was running, but did say “Americans were sick of political division in the country.”
He said a “divided country” cannot work and talked about a movement to bring “the extremes back to the sensible and reasonable, responsible middle.”
The Senator wouldn’t answer about the possible need to run as an Independent.
Manchin’s willingness to buck his party’s positions many times demonstrates a backbone America badly needs in our leader.
Would it not be cool to have a President who was not beholden to either the Republican or Democratic parties?
Check young Joe Manchin out – you might just like him!
