The month of April is safe digging month, emphasizing the importance of taking all proper steps before beginning home projects of any kind.
Governor Laura Kelly recently signed a proclamation to that end, joining the Kansas Corporation Commission, Kansas 811 and others in reminding both excavators and DIY homeowners to call 811 before they begin digging on any projects to locate and flag any underground utility lines.
Not calling ahead increases the chance of striking any lines that may cause outages or inconveniences to neighborhoods. Residents are asked to call two days in advance of beginning any digging projects, regardless of the size.
