If you thought there was a lot of smoke in the air the past few days, you’re right.
The amount of acreage burned in Lyon and surrounding counties jumped dramatically between March 19 and this past Saturday, according to the Kansas Flint Hills Smoke Management Facebook page. Early information is pending, but much of the acreage may well have been burned since this past Thursday, when the burn conditions became more conducive.
Areawide, over 106,000 acres have been burned this season — a nearly 20-fold increase from the 5,500 acres burned as of the March 19 report. Lyon County now has nearly 30,000 acres burned, followed by Wabaunsee County at over 22,000 acres and Chase County at nearly 21,000 acres burned.
We have the most recent information by area county posted online at KVOE.com. Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell will join KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment at 8:40 am Tuesday to talk about the recent burn season, occasional strain on emergency resources and the county’s ongoing burn permit policy.
