Emporia has a new assistant city manager.
The city has announced the hire of Mark Detter, most recently the city manager of Valdez, Alaska, and a prior city administrator in Rose Hill and Andover.
While at Valdez, a city with a population of nearly 4,000 residents, Detter oversaw a $50 million operating budget and specific projects like senior housing development and a new fire station.
Detter brings more than 28 years of city leadership experience to his position in Emporia, as well as time as Butler County’s assistant administrator and finance director.
Detter received bachelor’s degrees in political science and business administration, both from Southwestern College, and a master’s degree in public administration from Wichita State University. He has two sons and a daughter-in-law.
Detter begins in Emporia on May 30. He replaces Lane Massey, who served as Emporia’s assistant city manager for five years before becoming Spring Hill’s city administrator last summer.
