Emporia City Commissioner Becky Smith is up for re-election, and she has filed her paperwork to that end.
Smith was first elected in 2017 and was re-elected in 2019. Smith tells KVOE News there is positive momentum underway when it comes to city matters.
Smith sees several efforts currently underway as top priorities for her if she’s re-elected.
Smith is the first City Commission candidate on the ballot this year.
Overall, Lyon County’s ballot is gradually expanding. Neosho Rapids City Council member Brian Shank filed for re-election last week, joining Americus City Council incumbent Nicolette Nuessen on the county ballot.
School boards have seen more candidate traffic so far this cycle. Incumbents Gene Windle, Emily Darbyshire and Charles Steffes, along with newcomer Justin Farr, have all filed for USD 252 Southern Lyon County positions. So has USD 253 Emporia incumbent Jeremy Dorsey.
City Council, mayor and school board positions are part of this election cycle. The filing and withdrawal deadline is at noon June 1. A primary is set for Aug. 1 if enough candidates file.
