Evergy is the subject of another scam effort.
Spokesperson Kaley Bohlen says scammers have been increasing calls, texts, emails and even in-person efforts just in general, but a new scam involves scammers using paid or sponsored searching to have their fraudulent phone numbers displayed when people go online to search for Evergy.
Bohlen says there are several signs of potential scams, including threats to disconnect service within a short time after contact — usually no longer than an hour — and the need for pre-paid cards or payment through money apps and immediate callbacks to avoid shutoffs.
If you’re suspicious of the other person on the line, verify their affiliation with Evergy by asking to see ID or by calling the Evergy customer service center at 800-383-1183. Also, if you pay bills online, always use evergy.com for that purpose.
If you feel you have been victimized or approached by a scammer, you can now report that activity online at evergy.com/reportscam. You should also report that criminal activity to local law enforcement.
