Work to raise one bridge on Kansas Highway 99 over the Kansas Turnpike has been underway for about a month. Work to raise another bridge on K-99 over the Turnpike begins later this month, and signage is already out to alert drivers.
The second set of signage involves the K-99 bridge over the Turnpike near KTA mile marker 140, 13 miles northeast of Emporia. Work is already underway for the K-99 bridge over the Turnpike near KTA milepost 133.
With both bridges, the goal is to increase the clearance height and improve guardrails, bridge piers and slopes. The official detour sends drivers to Interstate 35 west to the Turnpike and then northeast 20 miles to the Admire-Council Grove exit before going west another four miles to reconnect with K-99 just north of Admire.
