Emporia’s Cinco de Mayo is on May 6, not May 5 — but that opens up the schedule for a daylong celebration. And that’s exactly what Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow has planned.
Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s victory over the French army at the Battle of Puebla and has turned into a cultural holiday. HOTT member Patricia Saenz-Reyes says the local celebration has grown tremendously since moving to downtown Emporia seven years ago.
Activities are legion, including the now-annual Cinco K 5K. Nuestra Musica host Vic Rodriguez says proceeds from the run will benefit a new venture locally.
The list of activities also includes Zumba, dancing, a performance of Los Puentes students, recognition of Emporia Spanish Speakers and HOTT scholarship winners, coronation of royalty, food, contests, prize drawings and a Chips Con Salsa street dance featuring Orquesta Cambalache. The 600 and 700 blocks of Commercial will be closed from 6 am to 8 pm for the celebration.
Details are online at hottfiesta.com and the HOTT Facebook page.
