The latest efforts to fill the Salvation Army of Emporia’s food pantry truly embodied the spirit of community Saturday.
The annual Stamp Out Hunger project saw various volunteers from the local community, Salvation Army, businesses and the US Postal Service collecting food donations from across Emporia Saturday morning and afternoon. Salvation Army Captain Mylie Hadden says the number of individuals who stepped up to lend a hand Saturday made the event “heartwarming.”
Hadden says Saturday’s efforts come as food continues to be a major need within the local community. She says the pantry shelves were nearly bare once collections began, however, that quickly changed as hundreds of boxes began piling up through the afternoon.
An approximate 6,200 lbs of food was donated through Stamp Out Hunger and Hadden says the total included a great variety of foods for local residents and families. She says the community truly covered both the bare necessities and added some “extra” goodies.
If you would like to access the food pantry you can call the Salvation Army offices at (620) 342-3093 to set up an appointment. Hadden asks that appointments be scheduled at least one day in advance of pickup.
