It isn’t to the size of last year’s rescue of over 80 cats, but an emergency intake being processed Wednesday at the Emporia Animal Shelter is enough to “overfill” the facility until further notice.
Shelter Director Stephanie Achille says Lyon County Emergency Communications alerted shelter staff about an incoming animal hoard around 9:30 am. Within the next 75 minutes, officers and vehicles brought in as many as 15 cats and three dogs, all ranging in size, color and age. Achille says the animals apparently were locked in an abandoned storage in the city limits for possibly a full day.
Health assessments are underway, but Achille says the health of most of the animals looks to be “decent.” Temperaments range from scared to friendly. None of the animals appear to be fixed.
Achille says the shelter program is already “beyond our capacity for care,” and this intake only aggravates the situation.
