A pair of nationally established journalists made an appearance in Emporia Sunday to honor the legacy and life of a well-known, respected and impactful Emporia resident.
Journalists Amy Bickel and Kathy Hanks were the featured presenters for the program “Remembering Barbara White Walker” the daughter of William Lindsay White and granddaughter of William Allen White who passed away in March. White Walker was adopted by William Lindsay and Katherine White while William was in London covering the start of World War II.
Along with serving as editor of the Gazette following her father’s passing, White Walker is also credited as being one of the founding members of the Emporia Community Foundation. More than just her accomplishments, Hanks and Bickle’s presentation focused on the challenges that White Walker had to overcome throughout her life.
Hanks says White Walker’s story is truly inspiring and it has become a great passion for both herself and Bickel.
Bickel, who previously worked with White Walker and says she was a “very special woman” who overcame great obstacles in pursuit of her accomplishments.
Sunday’s presentation is the official start of the Red Rocks State Historic Site summer series. More than 40 individuals attended the event.
