Nobody was hurt after a vehicle fire at the Kansas Turnpike Emporia tollgate Sunday afternoon.
Emporia Fire Capt. Ben Lienemann says unnamed Emporians were traveling from El Dorado and noticed their car wasn’t running right as they got to the tollgate around 1:30 pm. They got out as the engine caught fire. The fire then destroyed the car.
The cause isn’t finalized, but Lienemann says there was a mechanical malfunction involved. No Turnpike equipment was damaged in the incident.
