A week after the Emporia Animal Shelter took in nearly 20 pets as part of the latest emergency intake process, the 14 cats and three dogs may be ready for adoption soon.
Director Stephanie Achille says the goal is to get all intake pets spayed, neutered and vaccinated for rabies when the K-State veterinary department makes its next visit in Emporia on Tuesday. All have been treated for distemper, kennel cough and bordetella. They have also been treated for fleas and ticks.
Achille says the cats are being medicated for allergies or colds. Several had unspecified injuries when they came to the shelter. The dogs, meanwhile, were infested with worms when they arrived. No arrests have been announced.
The intake pushed the facility to nearly 25 animals over suggested capacity, renewing a call for more discussions about an expanded or new, larger facility. Achille is also asking for volunteers, supplies, adoptive residents and additional pet rescue groups to meet the need.
