Cyclists are already in town with the massive slate of Unbound Gravel activities not beginning until next week.
On KVOE’s monthly J&A Show Tuesday, Emporia Police detectives Jaffar Agha and Alec Ford asked everybody — standard vehicle and bike drivers alike — to follow the rules of the road.
The advice comes with over 4,000 riders — along with family, friends, rider team members and spectators — all expected in Emporia for Unbound next week as well as Saturday’s launch of the over-1,000-mile Flint Hills Ultra Gravel Tour from Emporia, but it also comes after an Unbound rider was killed just west of Emporia right before the main race day. Agha says both drivers and cyclists need to “be better” with their driving habits.
Besides Unbound coming soon, summer vacation is now here across the KVOE listening area — and Lyon County Crime Stoppers has already asked residents planning vacations not to announce their trips on social media because of the resulting risk of burglary or criminal damage. Ford and Agha agree, and speaking of specific social media dangers in another category, they both say parents need to take more time to monitor their children’s activity because of the risks, including sexual exploitation or cyberbullying.
