Travelers are expected to be hitting the road and the air this Memorial Day weekend.
Nearly 385,000 travelers are expected to travel according to AAA Kansas Public and Government Affairs Manager Shawn Steward.
Compared to 2022, travelers traveling this weekend is up eight percent.
About nine out of 10 people will take the highway to travel to their destination. An expected total of 341,000 Kansans will be on highways this weekend, which is up more than five percent from 2022.
With the COVID-19 pandemic in the rearview mirror, Steward says more people are wanting to travel.
Gas prices have remained steady over the first five months of the year. Steward explains the differences between this time last year to now.
In Emporia, gas prices are averaging $3.29 per gallon. Areawide, Osage City has the cheapest price at $3.19 per gallon. Olpe, New Strawn, and Burlington have the highest gas prices at $3.39 per gallon. The cheapest price in Kansas is $2.79 per gallon in Garnett.
Steward noted travelers should try and plan accordingly.
