After isolated severe weather Tuesday afternoon, isolated flooding may be a concern for Wednesday.
Tuesday’s storm activity led to severe hail reports west of Emporia. Hail to the size of ping pong balls and golf balls was reported near Council Grove and Council Grove Lake, with one report of the large hail falling for about 30 minutes before ending. Hail to the size of quarters was reported near Cedar Point. The storms were also slow movers and heavy rainfall producers, although we are awaiting rain reports from those parts of the listening area Wednesday morning. Totals as of 8:30 am Wednesday:
*KVOE studios: Nothing
*Emporia Municipal Airport: 0.23 inches
*Cottonwood Falls: 1 inch
*Waverly: 1.5 inches
There is a good chance of showers and storms for most of the day into mid-evening. Again, storms that develop will move slowly and potentially generate heavy rain — with rainfall rates of 1-3 inches an hour possible. Areas that have already seen heavy rainfall, including Chase, Morris and Osage counties, could see flooding if storms develop in those counties. Borderline severe storms can’t be ruled out, with hail and wind the main concerns.
With rain in the forecast and the Law Enforcement Torch Run coming to Emporia on Wednesday and leaving for El Dorado on Thursday, Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch tells KVOE News local law enforcement are riding to Coffey County on Wednesday if rainfall isn’t heavy. If there is lightning, law enforcement cyclists will travel by car or SUV to an area not affected by storms. The same approach will be used if needed Thursday.
