A Lyon County rape case has been set for a motions hearing ahead of potential trial dates.
Gerald Travis Todd faces two counts of rape and four counts of aggravated criminal sodomy after an alleged incident in August 2021. The motions hearing, slated for Aug. 17, resets the calendar for Todd, who was originally set for a trial status hearing Wednesday and trial possibly starting June 12.
Meanwhile, a pretrial conference has set for July in what was originally an attempted murder case in Lyon County until a hearing this week.
Rafael Castaneda had been charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault and other counts, but prosecutors have added an alternate of attempted voluntary manslaughter. Castaneda is accused of trying to kill Orlando Cortez during a reported shots fired incident in the 10 block of Market in early February. The hearing is July 21.
Separately, a man accused in Lyon County District Court of distributing up to 100 grams of methamphetamine and trafficking an unspecified crystal substance into a correctional facility has been deemed incompetent to stand trial — so a competency hearing will take place Aug. 31 in the case against Maurice De’Sean Evans. However, after accepting the evaluation report from CrossWinds Counseling and Wellness, Judge Laura Miser ordered another evaluation at Larned State Hospital before a decision on how court proceedings continue in this case.
In addition, a woman accused in Lyon County District Court of aggravated child endangerment and methamphetamine possession has reached a plea agreement and will be sentenced July 20. Christina Marie Williams pleaded no contest to meth possession. Remaining counts were dropped.
