It had its ups and downs at times, but overall you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who wouldn’t call the 2023 Unbound Gravel a great success.
Race Director Ben Sachs, a recent guest of KVOE’s Morning Show, says there was no shortage of memorable moments from the week’s worth of activities. That being said, Sachs feels there were some areas that could be improved.
Additionally, Sachs says there was some controversy regarding the high level of mud on the race course, however, Sachs and longtime organizer Kristi Mohn agreed it was an exciting challenge in addition to the hundreds of miles of gravel riding. Mohn adds that former Unbound 200 champion Ian Boswell paid the event a great compliment following the completion of his ride Saturday.
In addition to the record-setting number of participants, this year also saw 300 plus vendors for the All Things Gravel Expo, right around 1,000 volunteers and another exciting conclusion to the Unbound men’s 200 race that was separated by mere seconds. In terms of future expansion, Sachs believes the race may be at its limits for ridership, however, he believes the slate of additional activities has plenty of room for growth in the future.
Mohn says with the addition of so many activities over the past few years, Unbound is becoming a regular destination for not only competitors but spectators and cycling lovers in general.
