The Kansas Highway Patrol will have a new leader at the helm come July.
Friday, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced the appointment of Erik Smith as the KHP’s new Superintendent. Of his new appointment, Smith stated in a news release, “I am extremely grateful for Governor Kelly’s confidence and am humbled by the responsibility to carry on KHP’s storied tradition of service, courtesy, and protection.”
Smith is a 30-year veteran in law enforcement and previously served with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office before moving on to the Drug Enforcement Agency where he has served in a number of roles over the past 20 years including the position of Chief Inspector since 2021.
Smith will assume his new role effective July 7 and replaces former Superintendent Herman Jones who announced his retirement earlier this year.
