An exact date is pending, however, the city of Emporia is expecting a final report from its task force on homelessness sometime this month.
That’s according to task force member and United Way CEO Mickey Edwards during a recent appearance on KVOE’s Talk of Emporia. Edwards tells KVOE News the task force has been hard at work sifting through ways to better help serve the city’s homeless population which, contrary to the belief of some, does exist.
Edwards tells KVOE News the task force has had several ideas develop since it was established back in late December. One of the major topics that has been discussed is the creation of a “no barriers shelter” within the city.
The task force was formed after the passage of a controversial city ordinance prohibiting “public camping” last November. That ordinance was viewed by some as a direct attack on the city’s homeless population with Emporia Mayor Susan Brinkman stating the ordinance was both “rushed” and full of “sanitized language.”
An exact date for when the task force will present its final report is currently pending.
