The first-ever Flint Hills Ultra Gravel Ride went better than organizer Bobby Thompson expected.
Thompson had a review during KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Wednesday. He says he loves traveling back roads, but until recently he hadn’t driven to many small towns in the Flint Hills — which goes from north-central Kansas south into Oklahoma. He says he got more feedback from the towns on the route than he expected.
Better than 10 riders participated in the 1,000-mile ride. He says he was surprised by the interest, especially because of the distance and the resulting time involved.
The winner, speed track champion Ashton Lambie, finished in time to shower before the Gravel Cycling Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
With the Ultra Gravel Ride now done, Thompson is getting ready for the Rock Ridge Gravel Ride next month in Wabaunsee County — and planning for the Flint Hills Gravel Ride this fall for the event next spring. More information is available online at discovergravel.com.
