Amongst all the debate surrounding the LGBTQ+ community, a native Kansan is taking the time to have constructive discussions on the topic at the local and state levels.
Overland Park-based inspirational storyteller and activist Jae Moyer made a visit to Emporia’s First United Methodist Church Thursday evening where they met with several local residents for this exact reason. Moyer says in today’s climate it is important to provide opportunities to non-LGBTQ+ individuals to better understand the struggles of the community.
That being said, Moyer notes for these conversations to be productive, those involved have to enter with an open mind.
Moyer identifies as gender non-conforming and says many individuals like them, specifically those who identify as transgender, have come under intense scrutiny in recent months. Moyer pointed to Senate Bill 180, also known as the Women’s Bill of Rights, as a prime example.
Moyer feels the bill is a piece of legislation that could empower people to do harm against transgender and non-binary individuals across the state.
In response to SB 180 and with Pride Month coming to a close in the next week, Moyer has created a new event known as “Pride Never Ends.” Moyer explains Pride Never Ends is a series of rallies across the state to demonstrate unity against “harmful” legislation.
Moyer tells KVOE News it is their hope the demonstrations will send the message that hate and toxicity has no place in Kansas.
