On May 30, Emporia Police said they had established probable cause to believe four juveniles had made false statements to police while also saying officers had not found probable cause to report any intentional, inappropriate touching of students by adults at the Emporia Middle School dance earlier in the month.
Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman says a decision on whether to file formal charges — specifically false reporting as requested by Emporia Police — is pending.
Officers started their investigation following the dance May 12 as reports of alleged inappropriate activity rapidly became widespread on local social media. Police conducted more than 30 interviews and used over 10 officers and detectives as part of the resulting investigation. Police Capt. Lisa Hayes also says all alleged victims, as well as their parents and guardians, were given opportunities to see the video footage with detectives.
