With all the rainfall that has been scattered across the KVOE listening area the past two months, it may be surprising to learn most of the area is back in drought.
The US Drought Monitor has moderate drought covering virtually all of Lyon County, including Emporia, as well as east Morris County, far east Chase County, north Coffey County and south Osage County. Severe drought can be found in central Chase, south Coffey, north Greenwood and most of Morris counties. Extreme drought covers west Chase and most of Greenwood counties. Exceptional drought, the worst on the Drought Monitor’s scale, still covers southwest Greenwood County.
Abnormally dry to exceptional drought had covered the KVOE listening area for months beginning last year, but rainfall in late May and early June eliminated or sharply reduced the area drought levels.
