Emporia’s Friendship Center was evacuated as a precaution after a gas leak was reported to authorities Friday morning.
The call at 221 West Logan came in just after 8 am. Initially, Emporia Fire noted no signs of a leak, but the Friendshp Center says a pilot light was not lit.
No injuries were reported. Meals served to seniors may have to be be cold instead of hot until further notice.
It’s the second time in three weeks that Emporia Fire has responded to the Friendship Center for a possible gas leak June 13. The building had to be evacuated for that incident as well. The Friendship Center says the cause was a failed thermal coupler. The cause was initially reported to KVOE News as a stove knob that hadn’t been turned off.
