Rainfall earlier this week came too late to have any impact on the US Drought Monitor’s current update.
The Drought Monitor update still has moderate drought across most of Lyon County, including Emporia, as well as far east Chase County and eastern Morris County, but moderate drought now covers most of Osage County. Moderate drought also covers much of Chase, Coffey and Morris counties. Extreme drought is in place for the south half of Coffey County, the west quarter of Chase County and most of Greenwood County. There is still exceptional drought, the worst drought designation, in southwest Greenwood County.
Abnormally dry conditions, the first phase of drought, was in place for eastern Wabaunsee County last week. It has disappeared in Thursday’s update.
The latest map follows heavy rainfall across the entire KVOE listening area Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Emporia totals ranged from 1.2 inches to over 4 inches, and area totals were from 1-4.5 inches. Another 1-2 inches are possible areawide through early Saturday.
