Residents gathered all day Saturday in Olpe for the annual Downhome Festival.
A host of activities were on the schedule, including kids’ games, a street dance and a parade.
Downhome in its current format has been on the community calendar now for 20 years, taking out the COVID-19 pandemic, and City Clerk Joyce Wilson says it’s an important part of Olpe’s annual schedule.
Olpe Downhome continued fundraising for a splash pad to go in between the playgrounds at Jones Park. Totals are pending, but a grant-writing effort continues with the goal of starting construction next spring.
While a lot of attention recently has been on the splash pad, the work continues to create a fitness park involving Olpe High facilities and Jones Park — including the splash pad, walking trail with exercise amenities on the trail, reconfigured baseball and softball diamonds, repurposing the existing football practice field into the main stadium, field house and early childcare center. Fundraising continues separately for that multi-million-dollar project.
