Rainfall from the past two weeks put a small dent in the area’s drought north of Emporia.
Thursday’s update from the US Drought Monitor shows abnormally dry conditions across north Lyon and south Wabaunsee counties. That area was in moderate drought in the July 13 update.
The rest of the area map is largely unchanged from last week, meaning moderate drought for most of Lyon, Morris and Osage counties and a rapid transition to extreme drought for much of Chase, Coffey and Greenwood counties. Exceptional drought, the worst on the US Drought Monitor scale, remains in southwest Greenwood County just south of the KVOE listening area.
Thursday’s rain south and east of Emporia came too late to have any impact on the map released Thursday morning. The weekly data collection deadline is Tuesday.
