Lyon County Commissioners have set the date for a pair of budget-related hearings.
As part of their weekly action agenda Thursday morning, the commission approved a resolution stating its intent to exceed the revenue neutral rate for fiscal year 2024. Separately, commissioners approved publication of the proposed 2024 budget.
As it stands now, the budget carries a total of just over $40 million with a mill levy increase of 4.5 mills and an RNR of 49.23. Lyon County Controller Dan Williams notes the increase is not set in stone as commissioners can still lower it in the coming weeks.
In terms of the potential increase, Commission Chair Rollie Martin says while it is not favorable, it is significantly lower than where the commission began.
Martin says commissioners will continue to review and evaluate the budget in the coming weeks in hopes of lowering the levy. A week ago, the commission noted its intent to not alter any staff or services in order to lower the levy and Martin says maintaining all “basic infrastructure” will continue to be a major priority ahead of formal authorization of the budget.
A public hearing for both the RNR and budget will be held at 10 am Thursday, September 7 inside of the commission chambers.
In other business, commissioners approved the 2023 final budget report for the adult and juvenile KDOC budgets from Community Corrections Director Steve Willis. The purchase of a small new transit composite bus for Lyon County Transportation totaling $91,574, with 90 percent of the cost to be reimbursed by the Kansas Department of Transportation, was also considered and approved.
Commissioners will reconvene for their weekly action meeting next Thursday at 9 am inside of the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
