Local families and youth had the chance to get a close-up look at what the great outdoors can offer them Saturday.
Flint Hills Mall played host to the third annual Twin Rivers Junior Shooting Sports Exploring the Great Outdoors (EGO) Expo which provided several opportunities for local youth to examine and sample some of the activities you can only find in nature. From archery to fishing and even some bb shooting ranges there was just about anything and everything available at the expo.
Twin Rivers President Tony Leek says having an abundance of demonstrations and vendors on hand means there is a greater chance that children will find and latch on to an activity that introduces them to and keeps them in the great outdoors. Leek says this is very important to him personally, as outdoor activities have always been a significant part of his life.
Also on hand for the event were local agencies including the Emporia Fire Department, Emporia Police, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and the Lyon County Game Warden’s Office. Leek says the event’s ability to showcase law enforcement and first responders along with outdoor activities allows the opportunity to break down social stigmas surrounding both.
Other booths included Vamos a Pescar, Leap of Faith Martial Arts, Lyon County 4-H and the David Traylor Zoo. EGO was completely free to attend and included a hot dog lunch and door prize drawings.
