Saturday is busy in and around Emporia.
Besides activities already highlighted, including the start of Lyon County Fair 4-H events at the Fairgrounds, Kicks for Kids at Grace United Methodist Church and a fundraising car wash at Sommers Auto Plaza for a firefighter battling cancer, Big Brothers Big Sisters Serving Lyon County has its Give a Mulligan for Kids’ Sake golf tournament at the Emporia Golf Course. Registration begins at 7:30 am, with a shotgun start at 8:30 am and lunch, awards and prizes following the tournament. Registration is $75 a player or $300 per team.
The annual Gravel City Night Out bike ride into the Flint Hills takes place from 6-11:30 pm, launching again from downtown Emporia. Registration is $50.
And the Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center has a Creatures of the Night educational event from 8-9:30 pm. On KVOE’s ESU Buzz on Thursday, PAROC Outreach and Engagement Coordinator Daphne Mayes said the all-ages event focuses on the “wonders on what’s outside” — in this case, what’s outside after dark.
Other activities will include a tent set up for listening to night sounds, a moth-catching station and an opportunity to roast s’mores.
The event is already full. Mayes says it’s a broader event than one held the past two years focusing on moths.
PAROC is also getting ready for its Summer Science Camp for students age 13-14. That runs Tuesday-Friday, Aug. 4, and includes water quality experiments, information on energy sources and opportunities to observe nature while developing art, math and creative writing skills.
