More steam and stickiness is in the short-term forecast for area counties, but relief is in sight.
High temperatures climbed to 97 degrees Monday with a peak heat index reading of 103. High temperatures should get to 100 Tuesday, followed by a 103-degree day Wednesday and highs in the mid-90s for Thursday and Friday, with heat index readings as high as 103-108 during that stretch. All area counties remain in heat advisories or heat warnings Tuesday, with the warning for Greenwood County extending to Wednesday night.
Relief comes as part of extended thunderstorm chances, starting Wednesday night and going into early next week, and as part of sharply cooler temperatures beginning with temperatures in the mid-80s as soon as Sunday. Officially, there is a marginal risk of severe weather Tuesday night north of a line from Council Grove to Neosho Rapids. Wind and hail are the main hazards.
