More heat and steam are coming to the KVOE listening area to close out the work week before some welcome relief arrives.
Cloud cover for much of the day didn’t deter Emporia’s high temperatures from climbing to 101. Wednesday’s peak heat index reading was 106. Eureka’s air temperature got as high as 108 with a peak heat index of 110.
Temperatures will stay in the mid- to upper 90s Thursday and Friday. Heat advisories continue for Lyon and most surrounding counties Thursday with peak heat index readings as high as 105. Greenwood County is in an excessive heat warning Thursday, with a peak heat index reading as high as 106 expected.
Showers and scattered storms have not led to heavy rain totals Thursday morning:
*KVOE studios: 0.05 inches
*Emporia Municipal Airport: 0.01 inches
Slight to moderate chances for showers and thunderstorms are now part of the picture through at least Sunday. There is now a slight risk for severe weather Thursday night into early Friday and a marginal risk Friday night into early Saturday, with hail and wind as the main concerns. All hazards are possible areawide Saturday afternoon with a slight severe weather risk for most of Kansas.
