A two-week-old heat wave is broken, thanks in part to strong and severe thunderstorm activity late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
Storms brought widespread rainfall to Kansas, as well as severe wind to a few locations:
*Eureka: 60-72 mph wind gusts
*Matfield Green: 63 mph wind gusts
While the high wind reports were isolated, the storms left a lot of area residents without power. Evergy is reporting over 1,000 customers between Madison and Hamilton without power, while Eureka has over 900 customers offline and south Greenwood County, including Severy and Fall River, has over 1,000 customers without power. Smaller-scale outages were noted in Emporia, Allen, Council Grove and Lebo.
Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings for the area have all been canceled or allowed to expire.
Rain totals have varied widely:
*KVOE studios: 0.30 inches
*Emporia Municipal Airport: 0.05 inches
*Eureka Millikin Airport: 0.04 inches
Meanwhile, area residents can expect far more pleasant weather conditions than we have had since late July, when temperatures went occasionally above 100 degrees and heat index readings were consistently between 103-109. High temperatures will be in the mid- and upper 80s through Thursday, with slight chances of showers and storms Tuesday night through Wednesday night.
