Recent water main breaks on one east Emporia street have the attention of city officials.
Weaver Street, especially north of Sixth Avenue, was hard-hit by water line issues the past two weeks, with nearly 10 breaks reported in a three-day stretch. On KVOE’s Morning Show on Monday, City Engineer Jim Ubert said the first order of business is stabilizing the areas immediately around the breaks.
Meanwhile, as the City Engineering Office oversees or monitors ongoing projects like Street Rehab, Highland Street pavement improvements and the geometric work at Sixth and Prairie, it’s almost ready to begin a long-needed project for city parking lots downtown. Ubert says the project is ready to bid by mid-October, with the goal of finishing work by May 2024 ahead of Unbound Gravel. Landscaping and nose-in parking along Mechanic are now part of the project.
Ubert says the city has been holding off on work in the 600 and 700 blocks of Mechanic since the downtown sewer improvement project in 2018. The plan then was to start in 2020, with some behind-the-scenes work ongoing the past five years.
