With the school year getting set to begin next week, the Kansas State Department of Education is reminding residents of the rules of the road when it comes to school bus safety.
Motorists are reminded state law requires all vehicles to come to a complete stop when approaching a stopped school bus when its lights are flashing and the stop arm is deployed. Motorists then must remain stopped until the flashing lights cease and the arm retracts.
Not adhering to these laws can endanger the lives of children who may be exiting the bus. Violations are punishable by fines and court costs in excess of $420.
