Fire and smoke destroyed a fully-loaded U-Haul trailer near Emporia on Friday.
Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says the fire developed on Interstate 35 southbound near the East Sixth Avenue junction around 2:30 pm. Steinlage says a tire blowout caught all the trailer tires on fire. The fire then got into the trailer and damaged a couch, but smoke damage then destroyed all remaining contents.
The fire was initially reported as connected to a grass fire at the same time, but the brush fire was actually found at mile marker 134, or a mile east of the Emporia city limits. Roughly an acre burned before that fire was put out. The cause of that fire is undetermined.
Nobody was listed as hurt in either incident.
