The city of Emporia and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks are investigating a fish kill that came to light this week at the Peter Pan Park pond.
City Facilities Manager Kevin Hanlin says Wildlife and Parks visited the pond Monday. Hanlin says a water main break nearby put chlorinated water into the pond, causing the fish kill. He says there are currently no concerns about blue-green algae and anglers don’t need to avoid the pond at this time
There have also been concerns mentioned about the recent combination of high air temperatures and a lack of oxygen in the water. Despite the use of a water circulating device, according to City Manager Trey Cocking, over 60 shad were killed.
Cocking says the city may consider buying another circulating device to help avert similar situations down the road.
