There are just a few things left to do before improvements to Highland Street are finished — just in time for classes beginning Monday at Emporia State University.
Emporia City Engineer Jim Ubert tells KVOE News pavement is down and striping is down as well.
The east side of the 13th Avenue intersection and some intersection work at 12th is left.
Besides new pavement, Highland had improvements to curb and gutter as well as underground and above-ground utilities. Nose-in parking was also added.
Separately, the city’s other major street project — geometric improvements at Sixth and Prairie — was “substantially completed” in early August. There is still some signal timing to adjust before that project is officially done.
The city is still looking ahead to its City Connecting Link Improvement Program, or CCLIP. Officially, this involves US Highway 50 from Mechanic to the east city limits, but Ubert says there are two work zones — one between Mechanic Street and the viaduct and the other from Corinth to the city limits. Besides asphalt milling and overlay for both zones, the full-depth repairs from Corinth to the east mean one-lane traffic, flaggers and a pilot car will be used for that project zone.
