Miserable heat continues across the KVOE listening area, and now it looks like it may be Sunday before we get real relief.
Emporia’s Municipal Airport had a high temperature of 105, tying the daily record high set in 2000 and marking four straight days of new or matched high temperature records for the city. The peak heat index was 114 — with the heat index going above 100 before 10 am.
Eureka’s Milliken Airport had a high of 104, short of its daily record of 107 set in 1936. Its peak heat index was as high as 119.
The heat has been causing several schedule adjustments this week, mainly for area schools:
*USD 417 Morris County has announced no classes for Wednesday due to the expected heat. Early-morning sports and activity practices will be optional.
*Emporia High athletics practices will be held mornings or indoors all week. Junior varsity girls-only tennis meet set for Thursday in Emporia has been canceled.
*USD 251 North Lyon County has announced its practices for cross country, football and volleyball will be from 6-8 am Monday through Wednesday, with the rest of the week’s schedule to be determined. Middle school cross country is practicing in the mornings the rest of this week. District has coolers of water and cooling towels on buses for students that need them.
*USD 252 Southern Lyon County has coolers of water and cooling towels on buses for students that need them.
*USD 284 Chase County has football practice at 6 am Tuesday and Wednesday. The schedule for the rest of the week is to be determined. Tuesday’s football practice for students in grades 4-6 has been canceled.
*USD 330 Mission Valley has several adjustments. High school football will practice from 6:15-7:45 am Monday through Wednesday, with cross country at 7 am all week and volleyball at 3:45-5:30 pm Monday and 7:30-9:30 am Tuesday. Junior high football will practice from 7-9 am Monday-Wednesday. Junior high volleyball will practice from 3:45-5:30 pm all week.
*USD 389 Eureka’s junior varsity girls-only golf meet at Uniontown has been postponed until Monday.
*USD 454 Burlingame’s Night Lights event Friday has been canceled.
*USD 456 Marais des Cygnes Valley has high school football and volleyball and junior high volleyball practicing from 6-7:30 am Wednesday-Friday. Junior high football will have light activity after school with “significant” precautions. A shuttle leave from Quenemo at 5:30 am for student-athletes. The district’s Meet the Trojans event Thursday and High School Football Jamboree in Hartford on Friday are both canceled.
*All Emporia Recreation Commission practices this week, including those for tackle football, have been canceled.
The heat so far this week resulted in three people going to Newman Regional Health’s emergency room for treatment of heat-related issues Monday. All three were released. A report from Tuesday’s traffic should be announced by noon Wednesday.
The weather has also prompted the city of Emporia to start residential and commercial trash pickup earlier than normal — 5 am — Wednesday through Friday. Residents and business owners are asked to plan accordingly.
High temperatures should be short of records Wednesday as Emporia gets to 104, shy of the record of 107 set in 2011, but heat index readings could well be 110-120 statewide.
Earlier forecasts had highs in the low 90s Saturday, but now it appears the high could be in the mid- to upper 90s. Highs in the mid-80s are expected Sunday with a slight chance of storms.
