Utility crews have restored water service to Emporia customers following a line break Thursday afternoon.
The City of Emporia says service has been restored to residents between Weaver and Grand in east Emporia more than four hours after the break was reported on South Avenue around 2:35 pm. The break did occur in close proximity to the south avenue elevated storage tank, however, Public Works Director Dean Grant says the proximity to the tower was of no concern.
He says the real concern is the size of the line and the breaks time with ongoing water conservation efforts within the city through Friday night due to high levels of usage throughout the week. According to city communications manager Christine Torrens, the break developed on a ten inch line.
3 pm Thursday: Repair work underway following water main break in east Emporia Thursday afternoon
City of Emporia Underground Utility crews are at a water main break scene in eastern Emporia Thursday afternoon.
The break was reported on South Avenue at 2:35 pm. Full details, including the line size and restoration time, are currently pending.
The break is in close proximity to the South Avenue elevated storage tank, but thankfully Emporia Public Works Director Dean Grant says proximity is not the concern.
Grant says the other concern is the city of Emporia’s efforts to conserve water over the past 48 hours. He tells KVOE News that at a time like this they need every drop of water to reach the customers.
As repairs continue, water service will be disrupted to customers from Weaver to Grand Boulevard. The line break comes as the city of Emporia is continuing to ask residents to conserve water as much as possible due to a combination of record heat and water usage, 11-12 million gallons per day at times, over the past week.
